Hey sweet friends,
It is Father’s Day, and I don’t know about you, but this day puts me in a tailspin of emotions. I love celebrating my husband and all he does for our three children, but as some of you may be able to relate, I really miss my own dad.
This morning I woke up at sunrise, and this little memory kept popping into my mind. A few years ago on this very day, I did one tiny thing for my dad and It was one of the best decisions I’ve made to-date. It wasn’t over-the-top, lavish, or expensive. It was simple and sweet. See, I don’t know much, but I do know that giving something sweet to someone else, can be a meaningful gesture of love. Thank goodness I took the time to give something sweet to the sweetest man I’ve ever known, my dad.

On Father’s Day of 2016, I called my parents down in Florida to see what they were doing to celebrate. My mom had planned on driving my dad up to the historic restaurant at The Jekyll Island Club because they had the “best shrimp and grits” (Southern Living agrees), as well as really great live music, (The only two things that many of us southerners would need on a deserted island, thank you very much).
When I hung up after speaking to my parents, I felt overwhelmingly guilty for not being able to be with them that day. Our youngest had a stomach bug at the time, and we didn’t want to take a sick child to visit my dad, (he was 89 years old). So, in a last minute effort, I called the restaurant at The Jekyll Island Club and asked if I could have a piece of cheesecake sent to my dad with a Happy Father’s Day note. I had already sent a card and a gift, but I felt like this would be a fun surprise.
Anyways, the lovely staff at The Jekyll Island Club knew my dad well, and was totally on board with the plan. An couple of hours later, I received a text with this photo….
Having this dessert send to my dad was one of the best things I’ve done, because this was our last Father’s Day before my dad’s passing later that year. It was my last gesture of love to my real-life hero.
So for those of you who can relate, on days when we miss our dads so very much, we can’t forget about all of the sweet, small things we did to show our love. No matter how simple, our gestures made a truly meaningful impact on our fathers, and provided a sweet memory that we can hold closely in our hearts forever.
Happy Father’s Day,
Yum
