You can’t have a rainbow without any rain.
-Dolly Parton
This week we packed up our most treasured belongings, cleaned the house, and secured the outdoor furniture in preparation for Hurricane Irma. As the children and I were packing up, the UPS fairy brought us a special package, and a great excuse to take a break for some baking fun.
This was an important baking project as it provided me the opportunity to talk to the kids about their fears of hurricane Irma, and how to find courage when storms come in life.
The package we received contained a beautiful assortment of baking chocolates from Scharffen Berger. Scharffen Berger chocolate is some of the most complicated, fragrant and carefully crafted chocolate in the world. What I mean by that is that it’s yummy, really crazy-yummy. It’s the kind of chocolate that you don’t want to mess with too much, as the flavor is special just the way it is. Keeping that in mind, we decided to use the chocolate as a drizzle over classic homemade popovers served warm with a side of red currant jam. We used our favorite popover recipe, this popover pan, and these chocolates. You can weather any storm with a stash of these babies on hand!
As we were making the popover batter, I asked the kids what they thought you should do if a storm comes your way. This is what they said:
- Prepare
- Find a place to go, (“like a place with a trampoline-swing and a pool”)
- Have fun
- Be brave
- Re-build the “stuff that gets messed up”
I thought I was going to be the one dishing up advice, but the girls’ ideas were far better than my own. As we continued to talk, I explained that aside from actual storms, sometimes stormy times come your way in life. The bright side is that if you do exactly the things they suggested, (Prepare, have fun, be brave, rebuild if need-be) they can weather any storm. Furthermore, when the storm eventually passes, you will be happy, stronger and less fearful of any storms in the future. Remember that even Dolly Parton says that, “you can’t have a rainbow without any rain!”
In the end, the baking project was a big success. Baking is always a great activity on a rainy day, but even sweeter when you have big things to chat about with your children. We hope your skies stay blue, and you love this recipe as much as we do.
Yum
