Hello Sweet Friends,
I have decided to start a new section of my blog that focuses on baking basics. Think… how to bake a simple birthday cake, buttercream frosting, classic chocolate chip cookies, and pie crust. My hope is that this blog will be a cozy little place for you to go and find all of the easy and delicious baking staples you could possibly need.
This week, I am going to teach you guys how to bake buttery homemade biscuits like your grandmother used to make. Before we get started however, I must tell you that prior to a few weeks ago, I never had the courage to bake biscuits from scratch. I suppose I was intimidated in the same way I was about baking macarons for the first time. They are just so special! What got me baking biscuits was the opportunity to collaborate with White Lily, the 137 year old flour company that serves as the gold standard for biscuit baking. Anyways, as you can imagine, when a lovely company like white Lily asks for biscuits, you suck up your fears, tie up your aprons strings, and BAKE!
The recipe I’ve been using is based on the traditional White Lily biscuit recipe you can find on their flour bags. I just made a few modifications to simplify (but not compromise) the recipe. To my complete shock, the process of baking biscuits was so easy; maybe the easiest thing I’ve ever baked. So why all the fuss and fear? Well, I am from the south you see, and biscuits are a very important part of our culture around here.
If any of you are also from the south, then you understand the sacred place biscuits have in our culinary history. For example, many of our families sustained themselves during The Great Depression by baking biscuits every evening, and saving extra biscuits for feeding family the next morning for breakfast. That is in fact why it is customary in the south to have biscuits for breakfast, while in other parts of the world, biscuits for breakfast is just plain weird.
Anyways, while biscuits have a complex history, baking them from scratch isn’t complex in the least. All you need are three ingredients. White Lily All Purpose Flour, butter and buttermilk. Oh, and love! 🙂 So four ingredients. Take a look at how easy it is to bake fresh buttery biscuits like your Nana!
Does your family have a history of baking biscuits? If so, we would love to know your story and your tips for baking perfect biscuits. Seriously! Do you prefer butter or Crisco? Do you add baking soda, salt or any other ingredients to make your biscuits over-the-top delicious? Please share. Also, if you happen to try our recipe, please let us know what you think. Happy baking!
